ViewRanger 6 app revolutionises how to find next outdoor adventure

ViewRanger – the global, digital outdoor guide, mapping and navigation app – has launched a major upgrade designed to make the app the simplest way to choose your trail and explore the outdoors.

ViewRanger 6 combines a fresh visual approach and redesigned layout to make the app’s high-end GPS capabilities accessible to everyone. Whether you are planning a trek or want to find a family-friendly cycle ride, ViewRanger 6 is designed to help you quickly and easily plan, navigate, record and share your adventure.

The new format is designed to appeal to individuals participating at different levels within a range of activities including walking, cycling, and horse-riding. As the app learns the activities, locations, and general route profile each user interacts with most often, the trail suggestions highlighted by the app will become more closely tailored to the individual's preferences.

"Used by lovers of the outdoors, outdoor professionals and search and rescue teams around the world, the new version of the app is rolling out now on Apple App Store and Google Play. The release can be downloaded for free on Google Play (for Android smartphones and tablets and Android Wear enabled watches) and Apple App Store (for Apple iPhone, iPad). ViewRanger 6 comes ready with support for Apple Watch."

Previewed in the UK at the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF) and in France at the Destinations Nature Salon, users and partners were delighted by the new layout and immediately inspired by the fresh look and feel of ViewRanger 6 to search for new routes, browsing the massive library of guides that are now more obviously accessible.

The new discovery tab – an area dedicated to discovering information-rich trail guides worldwide – makes it quick to filter, browse and select routes from the extensive, high quality library available from over 500 tourism and outdoor guide publishing brands.

Gillie Molland, New Forest National Park Authority Lead Ranger, said: “Our rangers often get asked where the best walks in the New Forest are, so ViewRanger has been a really useful tool for sharing the best routes in an attractive and accessible way.

“Since we started using the ViewRanger platform last year, we have seen an impressive increase in the number of people accessing our walking routes online and expect the trend to continue throughout 2015. The new design and layout of the app will help us achieve this and ensure people continue to enjoy the unique landscape of the New Forest on foot.”

Long-time ViewRanger user and beta tester, Ian Goulding, said: "The new innovative interface is like a breath of spring, it's so easy and intuitive to use."

Craig Wareham, ViewRanger co-founder, said: “ViewRanger has always been about more than just navigating and ViewRanger 6 represents one of the biggest steps forward for the app since the company was founded.

“We’ve spent a lot of time looking at how we can radically change the way that active people can find the right outdoor trails for them. The new accessible format, coupled with informative and inspirational images makes it simple to find the right places to walk, bike and ride according to the individual’s needs while detailed mapping and route guides can be browsed and downloaded quickly, giving you everything you need to start navigating the trail in seconds.”

Hundreds of tourism organisations across Europe now use ViewRanger to publish and promote routes in their region, as do guide book publishers such as Bergverlag Rother (Germany), the AA (UK), and Menasha Ridge Press (US).

Other tourism organisations that publish on ViewRanger in the UK include Discover Suffolk, Walk Highlands, Cambridgeshire County Council, and Bicycle Island Visit Isle of Wight. Guide book publishers include Discovery Walking Guides, Vertebrate Publishing and WalkingWorld.com with magazine publishers including Trail Magazine and Mountain Biking UK.

Craig added: “All of an individual’s ViewRanger adventures including tracks recorded and routes downloaded or plotted are stored and brought to life in ViewRanger 6 with maps and photos helping everyone get the most out of every adventure, great or small.

“ViewRanger 6 also gives every app user and route guide publishing partner a space that can be personalised to share and promote their downloadable route guides. The changes have been inspired by customer research and interviews with expert walkers, cyclists and other outdoor enthusiasts.

“ViewRanger 6 is just the first in a series of developments that will be rolled out in the coming months – it’s the start of a new journey for ViewRanger, building upon a well established reputation for reliable outdoor navigation, which will help more people make better use of digital technology to discover the great outdoors at home and abroad.”

The app will be updated automatically for existing ViewRanger customers who have their phones set to do automatic app updates, otherwise users should update manually in their device's app store. Any information stored on the app such as purchased maps, downloaded routes and tracks will not be affected by the changes.
