The new generation believe they can be 'anything they want to be', but can they really?

Over the past ten years, as the economy has begun to bounce back, research has found that people are becoming increasingly optimistic about their potential. In fact, according to Dr. Jean Twenge, generations X and Y now believe they can be “anything they want to be”.

Career Ambitions writes:

To many realists, this may sound like a ridiculous statement. Of course when we are young we are encouraged to dream, to reach for the stars… but in reality? How likely is it that you will end up with the dream job, on the dream salary, with the dream house, the dream car? For most, this just isn’t the case, and perhaps never will be. So for those people, how can they bring their current job more in line with their dream job?

The answer is Career Crafting. Those who are proactive enough to take the initiative and act can get a lot more out of their work day to day than those more willing to rest on their laurels and accept their situation. So what exactly is Career Crafting? The concept is simple. The employee tailors their role better to suit their motivations, skills and interests. How? By changing tasks, developing new relationships and changing perceptions within the workplace.

For employers this may sound scary! But it’s not about your employees completely changing their job – at the end of the day they still have to fulfill the role that they signed up for. It’s about the ways in which individuals can take ownership of their careers and seek out opportunities that better suit their strengths and work on their weaknesses.

Ultimately, it will have a huge benefit for the company, as higher levels of engagement and employee satisfaction mean a better workforce who are less likely to be looking elsewhere - which in a time of plummeting workplace engagement levels, with up to 65% of workers reporting feeling dissatisfied with their jobs (according to a report published by the CIPD), could be crucial.

So how can you encourage and support your team in their career development and Career Crafting?

Career Ambitions has put together a Career Crafting Coaching programme that will allow employees to analyse their roles and identify the areas that could be tweaked in order to improve their engagement at work. After the programme, employees will leave with an action plan, excited about the future of their role and have renewed zest for their career. What more could you want?
