Irwin Mitchell supports Headway Cambridgeshire gym

People with a brain injury or illness in Cambridge now have access to an upgraded specialist gym after charity Headway Cambridgeshire officially opened a new facility at its base in the city at a special event this week.

Opened by the Mayor of Cambridge Councillor Gerri Bird on 20 May to coincide with the national Action for Brain Injury Week, the gym at Headway Cambridgeshire has been developed to allow people with a range of abilities to both exercise and continue courses of rehabilitation, with sessions all being supervised by a fully qualified gym instructor.

As well as offering specialist support, open gym sessions are also available at other times for those seeking personal training sessions with access to all equipment. There is limited access for members of the local community to also use the facilities.

Kathy Bullock, Headway Cambridgeshire’s Service Manager said, “We are really grateful to Irwin Mitchell for their support because we are able to offer this specialist facility to people with a brain injury and also the wider community who may wish to make use of our both our adapted (fully wheelchair accessible) and non-adapted equipment in a supportive environment with individualised instruction.”

Specialist serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, who provide advice and support to those affected by brain injuries, have made a donation of £5,000 towards the development and running of the site alongside other donors who have helped with the cost of the facility.

Neil Whiteley, Regional Managing Partner of Irwin Mitchell’s Cambridge office and an expert in serious injury, said: “Headway Cambridgeshire offers an incredibly important service for both those who have suffered a brain injury and their families, not only putting them in touch with people with similar experiences but also helping them continue with their recovery. The official opening of their gym is a fantastic moment for the local area and will ensure that many people affected by brain injuries are able to push on with rehabilitation and remain active. We are delighted to lend our support both to the opening of this facility and also to Headway, which we have been proud supporters of as a firm for a great number of years.”
