Deloitte duo saddle up for cycle challenge

15-06-2010

Two employees from Deloitte in Cambridge are cycling the length of the UK in aid of charity.

Alice Hawkes and Sam Pringle are taking part in the firm’s ‘Ride Across Britain’ challenge from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

The couple have joined more than 100 cyclists from Deloitte’s offices across the UK on the 1,000-mile journey from Scotland to the most southerly tip of England. The gruelling ride, which started on Saturday 12 June, will take nine days to complete, with each rider on average clocking up 112 miles each day.

The Deloitte cyclists will be joined by more than 500 others, including clients of the firm, members of public and sporting stars, including Paralympic gold medallist Sarah Storey.

The riders will be raising money for ParalympicsGB. Deloitte has chosen the charity as it is aligned to Deloitte Disability Sport, a programme that aims to get disabled people active and competing and winning in sport. Over the next four years the firm aims to raise £1m for the charity.

Alice and Sam, who both work in Deloitte’s Entrepreneurial Business team, trained intensively in preparation for the race, during which each rider will burn around 23,600 calories – the equivalent of 236 bananas.

Alice said: “One thousand miles is a long way so we have tried to prepare ourselves as much as possible, which inevitably meant spending a lot of time on the saddle. It will be a great experience but I’ll be glad to see the finish line at Land’s End.”

Richard Knights, Deloitte Cambridge 2012 partner, said: “All of the riders are committed to raising as much money as possible for the charity. It is essential that ParalympicsGB continues to receive the financial support it requires to train, improve and inspire athletes in the run up to London 2012.

“We are all behind them and wish them a safe journey as they peddle their way to the finish line.”

The Deloitte Ride Across Britain will be run and managed by Threshold Sports.

James Cracknell, Olympian and co-founding director, said: “We’re delighted to be supported by Deloitte for the Deloitte Ride Across Britain. We wanted to create a cycling event that would give everybody the opportunity to get outdoors and achieve something new and exciting.

“Selecting ParalympicsGB as the charity partner will provide disability sport with an extra boost to help nurture and develop future Paralympians. Deloitte’s contribution will have a lasting impact for years to come.”
