Deloitte Great Debate 2011 takes place in Cambridge next week

22-09-2011

This house believes that government intervenes too much in business. Discuss.

Leading figures from the worlds of business and politics will be battling it out in a war of words when they take part in Deloitte’s ‘Great Debate’ in Cambridge next week.

The two teams, one arguing for and one arguing against, will lock verbal horns on the subject of whether government intervenes too much in business. Last year Deloitte held a debate on the motion as to whether or not education has failed business.

This now annual event will be held in the debating chamber of the Cambridge Union Society, on Thursday 29 September 2011. Founded in 1815, it is the oldest and most prestigious student debating society in the world.

Over the years the chamber has played host to great figures of national and international importance, including British Prime Ministers, US Presidents, renowned authors, actors, singers and sports people and Deloitte is very pleased to be able to host its own business debate in such historic surroundings.

Arguing for the motion that government intervenes too much in business will be Baroness Jo Valentine, a Crossbench Peer and member of the House of Lords, Rt Hon David Davis MP and Jan Cavelle, founder and MD of a local furniture manufacturing company. Jan is a UK FEA, (United Kingdom Female Entrepreneurship Ambassador).

On the opposing side will be Sir Andrew Cahn, former head of UK Trade and Investment and Vice Chairman of Nomura International; George Freeman MP and Ken Olisa OBE, who runs Restoration Partners, a boutique technology merchant bank.

The debate will be chaired by Calum MacDonald, current President of the Cambridge Union Society.

Andy Swarbrick, partner at Deloitte in Cambridge, said: “We are delighted to have assembled an eminent and talented group of speakers for and against the motion and look forward to what will undoubtedly be a fascinating debate.”
