Red Gate Software announces 15 potential astronauts

A trip into space is a step closer for 15 lucky finalists announced in Red Gate Software’s DBA in Space competition.

The final winner, who will blast off on a Space Adventures flight into suborbital space, will be selected through a 50/50 combination of American Idol-style public voting between now and December 13 and the views of a panel of judges.

“We’ve been blown away by the number of entrants to DBA in Space and the judges had an incredibly tough job whittling it down to just 15 finalists.”

Shortlisted by eminent judges, including Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, from more than 5,500 entrants, the 15 potential astronauts successfully answered 14 fiendish online video questions and were then selected based on what they’d tweet from space. The competition was open to database administrators (DBAs) and anyone involved with IT databases in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada and Germany. As well as Coxon, the judging panel comprises Simon Galbraith, joint-CEO of Red Gate Software, and Buck Woody, senior technical specialist for Microsoft and author of more than 500 articles and five books on databases.

“We’ve been blown away by the number of entrants to DBA in Space and the judges had an incredibly tough job whittling it down to just 15 finalists,” says Neil Davidson, joint-CEO of Red Gate.

“Now the battle begins in earnest to win the public vote – one database administrator will be eligible to blast off into space and have a really Happy Christmas, while the others will come back down to earth with their fall cushioned by winning both Red Gate products and a host of cool stuff. Good luck to all 15 and may the best DBA win!”
