Will new technologies normalise sex selective abortion?

Innovations invariably inspire controversy and challenge - few more so than those associated with women’s fertility, birth control and the future health of newborns.

New technologies for non-invasive prenatal testing will enable us to identify earlier, more accurately and more safely, which foetuses are likely to have significant medical problems such as genetic diseases or Down’s syndrome – as well as revealing foetal sex.  There is already major demand from women for access to this safer, earlier testing.

However, earlier and risk-free testing will inevitably change the decision-making process. In the light of recent media reports of evidence of sex selection at UK abortion clinics, the PHG Foundation asks: “What are the implications for countries and cultures where sex selection is practiced? “

PHG Foundation's free seminar on 8 March, International Women’s Day, explores this technology and the ethical implications it provokes with special reference to birth preferences in Asian countries. This event is held in partnership with The Humanitarian Centre.

All are wlecome at Hughes Hall from 5-7pm to listen to expert perspectives, share your own views, and enjoy complementary refreshments.
