MentorSET - a mentoring scheme for women scientists and engineers

01-06-2004

MentorSET is an initiative of the Association for Women in Science and Engineering (AWiSE) and the Women's Engineering Society (WES) and aims to increase the number of women who can maintain their SET careers and realise their full potential.

MentorSET has been growing in the Cambridge area and we now have a demand for more mentors, particularly those with experience in bioscience companies.

The mentor acts as advisor and guide to enable the mentee to develop her career. You don't have to be at the top of your profession to be a mentor. MentorSET expects a mentor to be a suitably experienced person who is willing to help another, less experienced in a given area, by acting as a guide.

The main objective of the mentoring relationship is to improve the performance and enhance the potential of the mentee by enabling her to benefit from the experience of the mentor.

One mentor wrote: 'I had a great sense of achievement seeing my mentee survive problems, where I stumbled'.

On a more personal level, the mentor can provide coaching on interpersonal and organisational skills. Mentors can also provide a sounding board against which to bounce new ideas, clarify problems and suggest alternative working methods. The recruitment of good mentors is key to the success of the programme. We are looking for family friendly women (and men) who would like to be mentors.

To be a mentor, there is no need for you to be a member of WES or AWiSE and no prior knowledge of mentoring is required. Mentors will be assessed, given training, and then accredited by MentorSET.

If you would like to become a Mentor, please complete the MentorSET questionnaire which can be found at www.mentorset.org.uk (follow the 'APPLY' link). You can find out more about it by attending one of the AWiSE meetings - the next one is on 8 June - many of the AWiSE members there are also participating in MentorSET.

The project's main sponsor is the Promoting SET for Women unit of the UK Government's Department of Trade and Industry. Other sponsors include the companies Siemens, AstraZeneca, FORD, Pfizer, Iquentis, and Matra BAE Dynamics (UK).

Cambridge AWiSE is a regional network for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM) in both industry and academia. It supports recruitment, retention, promotion and return to a STEMM career after a break. We bring together women with common interests and act as a source of support, information, and inspiration. We provide regular workshops, training, talks, networking opportunities and information through our website and newsletter.
