Cambridge AWiSE celebrates

07-11-2006

Cambridge AWiSE announce the launch of their Networking and Mentoring Scheme to enhance the participation of women in science, engineering and technology fields throughout their careers in the Cambridge region.

Dr Lucy Spokes will be running the project, organising networking meetings, personal development workshops and helping to promote the MentorSET mentoring scheme for women in science, engineering and technology in the region.

Dr Jenny Koenig, Chair of Cambridge AWiSE said 'we are really pleased to receive generous funding from the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET as well as local organisations including University of Cambridge, Medical Research Council, Science International, The MathWorks Ltd, Royal Society of Chemistry and Cambridge Science Park.

'This funding recognises all the hard work we've put into developing CamAWiSE. Despite all the advances that have been made, we don't yet have a level playing field for women in SET.'

Around 50,000 women with qualifications and experience in science, engineering and technology (SET) are not working in these areas*. Even in the life sciences where women make up more than half of undergraduates and postgraduate students, they make up less than a quarter of lecturers.

AWiSE Networking meetings cover a wide range of topics. We are currently running meetings discussing personal development and different career paths for women in SET.

We are affiliated to the national MentorSET mentor scheme (www.mentorset.org.uk). This provides free one-to-one mentoring with training for mentors and mentees. MentorSET aims to make working in SET a better experience for women and to help women reach their potential.

Cambridge Association for Women in Science and Engineering aims to help retain and enhance the participation of women in SET in both industry and academia.

Cambridge AWiSE is a regional network for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM) in both industry and academia. It supports recruitment, retention, promotion and return to a STEMM career after a break. We bring together women with common interests and act as a source of support, information, and inspiration. We provide regular workshops, training, talks, networking opportunities and information through our website and newsletter.
