SBS supports National Science strategy


The held a Press Conference in November in support of a Bill presented in the House of Commons under the '10 minute rule' by Dr.

Ian Gibson, MP for Norwich North.

Dr Gibson's Bill calls for a coherent, cross government ``National Strategy for Science' including a 'doubling of national government funding for basic science, technological, medical and pre-competitive research' over the next ten years.

The principal speakers at the Press Conference, which was chaired by Sir Alec Ash FRS FREng, were the Astronomer Royal, Sir Martin Rees FRS, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of Engineering at Cambridge, Professor David Newland FREng, and Mr. Phillip Wright representing Sir Richard Sykes FRS, Chairman of Glaxo Wellcome.

All welcomed the Bill and stressed the need to double science funding to ensure a world-class UK science and engineering base able to offer outstanding opportunities for research and attractive career prospects.

As one speaker put it, the UK should set out to attract the best talents world-wide.
