The launch of the revolutionary e-voting trial in Ipswich, 'It's Your Call', is already proving to be a success.
'It's Your Call' voting success
In just four days 1,400 people had already pre-registered to vote through the trial electronic scheme in the local elections on Thursday 1st May.
E-voting gives people the choice of voting online, by text message, by touch tone phone or using inter-active digital TV as well as voting in person and by post. It's all about giving people more choice.
People who want to use new technology to vote need to register with the Council first by using a special freephone number and the details are being sent to them in a letter from the Returning Officer, James Hehir, Chief Executive of Ipswich Borough Council. Once they have registered (and this must be done by Friday 11th April) voters have a week to vote - from 8am on 24th April to 9pm on 1st May.
Ipswich is one of 18 councils taking part in an e-voting trial and is planning a number of high-profile events to get the message across. E-flyers have been sent to all IP-City firms and other big employers in the town.
