New MD for Microsoft

Andrew Herbert is the new managing director of Microsoft Research in Cambridge, taking over from Prof Roger Needham, who died on February 28th.

Prof Herbert joined the research laboratory in 2001 as an assistant director.

He was previously responsible for advanced technology at Citrix Systems Inc, which he joined following acquisition of his own company Digitivity Inc in 1998.

This, in turn, had been a spin-out from another company he founded, APM.

Before starting APM he was in the computer laboratory at Cambridge University, where he worked with Prof Needham.

He is a senior member of Wolfson College, a member of St John's College, and visiting professor at the University of Essex.

He is a graduate of Leeds University, with his PhD from Cambridge.
