Red Gate voted in the top 100 best small companies for the third year running!

“Free hot meals, photography club, wine tasting and no dress code, plus the chance to do great work with awesome people” is why Alice Chapman enjoys working at Red Gate so much, and is part of the reason why Red Gate has, for the third year running, been voted as one of the top 100 small businesses to work for in the UK.

“It’s a great achievement,” said Neil Davidson, joint CEO. “What makes the Sunday Times Best Companies Award so great is that it’s based on the opinion of the people who work here.”

One of the features that Red Gaters particularly like is its openness. “I like being able to talk to anybody, no matter where they work in the company or what they do” said Michael Francis, a Red Gate brand manager. “There are no barriers between the people here, or between us and our customers.”

Some 90% of employees responded to the 66 question survey. Red Gate scored particularly highly in the wellbeing and giving something back categories. 81% of Red Gate employees agreed that profit isn’t the only thing driving the organisation – a score that puts Red Gate in the top twenty for that category.

But what about that free food? Red Gate started offering free hot breakfasts and cooked lunches to all their staff in February, despite the economic downturn. According to Davidson, “Sure, it’s got a measurable cost but it also has an immeasurable benefit. You can’t point to a bacon butty and say that sandwich cost Red Gate £2 but will generate £4 in revenue. But the benefit – financial and otherwise – is still there. Eating lunch together, and the conversations that otherwise wouldn’t happen, are extremely valuable.”

According to the survey, Red Gate retains its position as the best small company in Cambridge, and the best small software development company in the UK.
