Marshall apprentice achieves silver at national awards

David Firth, a Marshall Aerospace Defence Group Apprentice, has just been awarded the Silver Award as the runner-up at the recent National Engineering Employers Federation Manufacturing Awards for 2012 held in London. David, who lives in Cambridge, was selected as a finalist, having won the Regional Award for the South East last November.

These annual awards from the Engineering Employers Federation, the manufacturers' organistaion, recognise excellence and enterprise, innovation, environmental performance and skills development among UK manufacturers and the outstanding achievement by a first year apprentice is presented to the apprentice who has done most to seize the training and development opportunities made available during the first year of their apprenticeship training.

Rob Butler, Manager of Marshall AeroAcademy, which runs the Company’s Apprentice Training Programme, said: ‘The competition was extremely close and the award for first place was almost a tie.  Judges deliberated long and hard to select the eventual winner and this was the first time ever that a runner-up prize, which recognised the excellence of David’s performance, had been awarded.’

The award ceremony took place at a Gala Dinner in the Grand Connaught Rooms, London and the prizes were presented by Sarah Sillers (formerly the Chief Executive of the Institute for the Motor Industry, who has recently taken over as Chief Executive of Semta, the Training Agency), who is coincidentally a non-Executive Director of Marshall of Cambridge.

Rob Butler added: ‘I am very proud of the calibre of apprentices that Marshall develops each year and this is the second consecutive year in which a Marshall apprentice has reached a National Final of this prestigious award.’
