Companies thrive in science park setting

A number of small companies and start-ups that moved to Granta Park last year on flexible leases are now committing to long term leases at the science park south of Cambridge.

Lycotec, which develops active ingredients for functional foods, moved to the newly refurbished McClintock Building at Granta Park last year, originally taking up an offer of free meeting facilities at the park and then growing to such a level that it was able to take space.

Says Will George, who looks after business operations for the company: “We decided to locate to Granta Park because of the high quality space available, the facilities on the Park and the flexibility of the lease.  From the start we received loads of help, support and recommendations, both from MEPC and from fellow tenants.  We have chosen to stay at the Park because even when times have been tough we have felt supported by the landlord and encouraged to explore new areas. It is so reassuring to know that Granta Park take a genuine interest in our business and are not just about collecting the rent.  As our company grows we hope to remain on the Park and demonstrate our commitment to making it a great place to do business.”

Since moving to Granta Park, Lycotec has developed technology that converts all edible fats and oils into lipid-lowering and weight management products as well as preventing the accumulation of excessive fat in our body from overeating. Based on this, the company has developed new chocolate and butter products.

Says Granta Park Estate Director Roz Bird: “In the current climate, taking office or lab space is a huge commitment for companies, which is why we do all we can to help these smaller companies and start-ups achieve this important step. We’re delighted therefore that Lycotec and other companies have thrived here, making the most of all the advantages of being part of a thriving science community.”

Managed and operated by MEPC, Granta Park is located south of Cambridge in the heart of the Cambridge Science Cluster. Companies on the science park include MedImmune, Pfizer, PPD and TWI. The McClintock Building and Riverside Development offer flexible office and R & D units, allowing growing companies to work within a thriving science community, which includes a sports and social programme, cafe, restaurant, nursery, fitness suite, commuter bus and 24 hour security and free meeting facilities.

Space is available from 800 sq ft (74 sq m) to 330,000 sq ft (31,000 sq m) ranging from flexible leases on fully fitted offices to development land ready for specialist buildings to be built.
