The Cambridge abseil raises funds for EACH

The Cambridge Building Society's Chief Executive has pledged to take on a tall challenge this year – all in aid of a local children’s charity.

Stephen Mitcham has signed up to take part in the East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) Cambridge Abseil, which will take place on Sunday 18th October at the Cambridge Guildhall.

The Cambridge is proud sponsor of the event, which opened for registration on Saturday 1st August. Brave participants will scale the 80 foot drop of this historic landmark, giving them a bird’s eye view of many of the city’s historic landmarks. Abseilers will be raising valuable funds for EACH who care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire.

As well as being headline sponsors The Cambridge will also support with promotion of the event and provide volunteers to help out on the day as part of its commitment to the community.

This won’t be the first time Stephen has abseiled and he would encourage anyone thinking about doing this extreme sport to give it a go.

He said: “Although I haven’t abseiled in the last 20 years I’m really looking forward to giving this a go again and for such a great cause. There aren’t many cliffs in Cambridgeshire so this opportunity to abseil in the city centre is pretty special. It’s brilliant to be able to do something so exhilarating to raise much needed funds for this wonderful charity.”

Lucy Glover, EACH Cambridgeshire Fundraiser, said: “We are thrilled the Stephen Mitcham has signed-up to take part in our Cambridge Abseil and would like to say a big thank you to Cambridge Building Society for sponsoring the event. Without the support of local businesses such as The Cambridge we would not be able to host the number of events that we do.

“This is the third year we have held the abseil in the city and it’s always such a great atmosphere. Spaces are limited so please do book quickly to avoid disappointment. People who take part always feel a great sense of achievement – so even if you don’t have a head for heights why not push yourself to take part and raise money for a great cause at the same time!”

Entry fees are £15 per person, with a minimum sponsorship figure of £85 per person for anyone aged 17 and over or sponsorship figure of £30 per person for anyone aged 16 and under. Minimum age for participants is 12 year.

The abseilers will be in the safe hands of professional company, Creation Climbing Centre, who will be running the event on the day.

Sponsorship raised from the event will provide care and support to life-threatened children and their families across Cambridgeshire.
