Splint to protect ‘funny bone’ nerve wins healthcare innovation competition

A CUH consultant has won an award to develop a splint to protect the ulnar nerve, commonly called the ‘funny bone’. Dr Andrew Michell is one of the two winners of the latest Health Enterprise East Innovation competition.

He was awarded £5000 to develop a novel device to support and protect the ulnar nerve - a common cause of tingling and numb fingers.

The ulnar nerve runs down the inside part of the elbow and lets the brain know about feelings in the fourth and fifth fingers. It's also one of the nerves that controls some of the movements of the hand.

It is hoped that Dr Michell’s device will become a first-line treatment for patients, given out by GP's or for sale on the high street, with the aim of reducing symptoms and the need for further treatment such as surgery.

Dr Andrew Michell, lead consultant in clinical neurophysiology, said: “I am delighted to win this award to help develop the ulnar splint. Symptoms are common across the age spectrum, and often first noticed at night.

“With this splint we hope to provide a first line treatment for these troublesome symptoms, and hopefully reduce the need for surgery."

The winners were announced at a NHS innovation showcase event organised by Health Enterprise East (HEE), the leading NHS Innovation Hub for the East of England, East Midlands and North London.

The one-day event on 12 October focussed on connecting academic, commercial and public sector groups to explore the latest healthcare innovations in the region.

The event welcomed 27 exhibitors and over 100 delegates to hear a variety of high profile speakers from both industry and the NHS. The exhibition provided the opportunity to see innovative healthcare products first hand, and to speak to the companies and NHS Trusts behind them. Breakout sessions enabled attendees to explore issues around IP development and funding, research, development and commercialisation. The day was hosted by science writer and Broadcaster Vivienne Parry OBE.

The twice yearly competition is open to all HEE member Trusts such as CUH.

Dr Anne Blackwood, Chief Executive, Health Enterprise East, commented: “Helping to forge stronger connections between the NHS and industry is a key role of Health Enterprise East. We are delighted with the success of the inaugural Innovation Showcase, and would like to thank all of the speakers, exhibitors and delegates who supported us this year.”

Elisabeth Buggins, Chair of the Eastern Academic Health Science Network (AHSN), and keynote speaker at the event, said: “At Eastern AHSN we are driven by two goals: improving healthcare and generating economic growth. We are very lucky to have in our region one of the most successful Innovation Hubs, and I would like to thank Health Enterprise East for putting on such a fantastic collaborative event.”
