Spike in outplacement demand - recession hangover?

In recent months professional career coaches Lindsey Reed and Katherine Wiid of Career Ambitions have noticed a significant increase in the demand for outplacement work. Why?

Reports published have shown that the UK has finally recovered from the recession, a slow but steady process (read more here).

And while that may be news to celebrate, it hasn’t been an easy ride for many of our small businesses. As we come out of the recession tunnel, some companies have done well, while others have been left behind. Which means that they are now incredibly good value to buy! Not surprisingly therefore, mergers and acquisitions seem to be at an all time high, as the companies that came out shining snap up the deals and add to their portfolios.

But what is the effect of all this change?

For all employees it’s a tumultuous time, as some are made redundant, others change roles and all have to cope with changes to the way they work. For some, it’s easy enough to ride the wave and take whatever comes in their stride. But for most of us, change throws up uncertainty, and a whole bunch of emotions that we simply aren’t used to. And in turn, this can have a damaging effect on team morale, efficiency and productivity.

Here’s where Career Ambitions comes in! Companies have been found to benefit from providing their teams with coaching from a third party during restructures.  Someone outside the company who can listen to their worries and fears, and help them work through these and come out the other side. Support such as Managing Change Workshops have been found to benefit both the staff who are staying as well as those who are going.

A recent client of Career Ambitions found that offering Managing Change workshops to his team led to a change in behavior, resulting in less confrontation and a better atmosphere during the restructure (read the full testimonial here).

Change can go either way.  It could be a positive step for a company, or it could cause irreconcilable damage. The key to ensuring that change has a positive effect on the company is to be proactive, and to look after your staff no matter what their circumstances are.
