Record-breaking Charity of the Month Christmas boost for Arthur Rank

A record-breaking amount of more than £5,000 was handed to Arthur Rank Hospice Charity after a month of fundraising by The Cambridge Building Society.

The grand total of £5,275 has beaten last year’s amount of £4,600 which was raised for the charity.

Ely Branch Adviser Berni Turney (pictured left), who was one of the Charity of the Month team leaders during November, handed the money over on Wednesday.

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity holds a special place in Berni’s heart as both her mother-in-law and father-in-law were cared for at the Hospice.

She said: “This is the highest amount ever raised during Charity of the Month and I’m completely overwhelmed at the generosity people have shown.

“I’m thrilled to be able to give such a significant amount of money to the charity that gave my in-laws and the whole family the best possible care and support at such a difficult time.

“I’ve worked with the team for several years now but will be taking a break from being a team leader next year so it’s wonderful to go out on such an amazing total.”

Berni and her fellow team leader Facilities Assistant Emily Elphick arranged an action-packed month of activity in support of the charity.

Fundraising at Head Office included penny wars, a guess the baby photo competition, cake baking contest and a dress down day. Arthur Rank Christmas stock was sold at Head Office and in all branches while volunteers hosted a stall at the Ely Cathedral Gift and Food Fair to boost takings. Some branches arranged book sales to supplement fundraising.

The Cambridge also sponsored the Ely Festive 5k in aid of Arthur Rank Hospice Charity which took place in November and volunteers helped out on the day with marshalling and serving refreshments.

Arthur Rank Hospice is dedicated to providing specialist palliative care and support to adult patients and their family, friends and carers. All care is provided free of charge, and is offered to people living throughout much of Cambridgeshire. The charity is currently raising funds for its new purpose built hospice due to open in late 2016.

Donna Talbot Director of Fundraising and Communications (pictured above right) said: “We are completely staggered at this fantastic amount raised. It’s absolutely brilliant that the team at The Cambridge managed to beat last year’s impressive total.

“We really enjoy working with The Cambridge on events and fundraising. The team is so accommodating and we’re thrilled to have been chosen as a Charity of the Month for 2016 too.

“We couldn’t do what we do without such support from the local community and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at The Cambridge and everyone who supported their fundraising activity.

“Of course a special mention must go to Berni who has been such a star in championing us over the years, we are so very grateful.”
