Explore Independent Cambridge: Afternoon Tease

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the definitive guide to ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Afternoon Tease.

King Street is one of Cambridge’s real indie destinations. Independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants all have their place along the city centre street and one of the most popular hangouts is Afternoon Tease.

Owned and run by local cake doyenne Jo Kruczynska, this bright and buzzy café opened for business in October 2013 and has always had its sights firmly set on doing the simple things well.

Homemade cakes adorn the counter (an obvious speciality given Jo’s baking talents) and include a luxurious chocolate Guinness cake with cream cheese icing through to a zingy lemon drizzle cake with lemon curd buttercream. Jo’s cakes are so good; she makes them for other local indies such as Hot Numbers and Duke House B&B and also takes private orders.

For something a bit special on the savoury side, you can’t do any better than an Afternoon Tease brunch. Once again, simple is best, but Jo has introduced her typically original twist. Poached eggs on Dovecote Bakery sourdough toast with bacon or English muffins topped with local smoked salmon and free range scrambled eggs – everything on the board tastes as good as it sounds, including the great coffee from Caravan and tea supplied by Eteaket.

So, whether breakfast, brunch, lunch or tea and cake, the Afternoon Tease offering is freshly made, using local produce wherever possible and always made with originality and simplicity at its heart.
