Explore Independent Cambridge: Bread & Meat

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the definitive guide to ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Bread & Meat lives up to its name.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that work best and  Bread & Meat have proved just that with the ethos of serving honest yet excellent food in the form of their fine roast meat sandwiches, making everything in-house even including their mayonnaises!

Owners Simon & Michelle Cheney opened Bread & Meat in November 2014, in what locals will remember as the old Benet’s coffee shop. Completely transforming the decor with retro-style tiling, wooden tables, metal stools and industrial lamps, the couple have created a very welcoming, Soho-style café feel.

Their signature dish is the porchetta sandwich. Served in ciabatta with crackling and their own salsa verde, the pork is stuffed with garlic, rosemary, sage and pepper and slow-roasted overnight. The aroma is so amazing it makes it hard to think of ordering anything else. Luckily, this is always on the menu along with regular sides of wedges and slaw.

The other sandwich options rotate weekly and include topside of beef, honey soy chicken and roasted vegetables. Another Bread & Meat speciality is Poutine – a Canadian dish of chips, gravy and deliciously squeaky cheese curds.

For something to drink, try the coffee – it’s excellent and so is the selection of wine and craft beers.

Bread & Meat opens for breakfast until the evening and is also available for hire for private gatherings.
