Perse particle physicists highly commended by CERN

An experiment designed by a group of Perse Sixth Formers was highly commended this week by CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research dedicated to probing the fundamental structure of the universe.

The team of 10 led by Steph Budenberg entered CERN’s Beamline for Schools competition with a proposal to re-create the Fitch Cronin experiment with kaons. They built a cloud chamber which they proposed to take to CERN, and set up an interactive web-page to crowd source the necessary analysis and to enable students from around the world to get involved.

They explained: “We want to inspire a generation of particle physicists and show them that the sub-atomic world is not as inaccessible as it may seem”.

More than 150 teams entered from 37 countries. While not one of the winning two teams selected to run their experiments on CERN beamlines in September, the Perse team was one of 29 runners-up whose entries drew special praise. They win a Cosmic Pi detector for their school that will allow them to detect cosmic-ray particles coming from outer space.
