Demand for outplacement support rises: 1 in 7 employees made redundant since the recession*

Over 3.5 million employees have been made redundant since the UK recession, and the results are being felt on the ground. In addition, the Brexit impact may result in more uncertainty and job losses.

Outplacement providers Career Ambitions have reported an unprecedented surge in the demand for outplacement coaching services in 2016, as companies manage organisational change and redundancy requirements.

The job market is unstable, with one in five employees looking for new jobs, according to the latest CIPD Report March 2016. While redundancies and restructuring inevitably continues, 2016 has seen a new focus from HR Managers; looking after employees, even on their way out.

Katherine Wiid of Career Ambitions noted: “We are seeing a rise in requests for outplacement services as companies offer more support to their past (and present) employees. We are noticing a demand for 1-2-1 coaching as well as group workshops, as decision makers recognise that people react differently to their job loss and require tailored levels of support”.

As one in five employees considers leaving their jobs, companies realise the importance of looking after their teams (whether staying or leaving). Offering professional outplacement support to those facing redundancy has been found to have a positive impact on the workplace: improving staff morale, increasing productivity levels and encouraging staff loyalty.

“Flexible outplacement and career coaching allows staff who have been made redundant to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It also prevents a negative mood within the office – which ultimately can result in other employees jumping ship!” commented Lindsey Reed, Career and Confidence Coach at Career Ambitions.

By offering professional, external outplacement support, HR Managers are ensuring a positive outcome not only for management, but also:

  •  For those left behind, who gain faith in their employers
  •  For those made redundant, who are supported through the process
  •  For their clients, who will see the care and support given to their staff.

As demand for outplacement services continues to increase, industry experts predict positive change among the UK workforce. With the right support and coaching intervention, perhaps one in five will not be quite as quick to change careers in 2016…
