UK productivity levels drop to the lowest in Europe

The workplace has undoubtedly become a tougher environment. As the economy swells and shrinks at an unpredictable rate, companies are demanding more from their employees in order to stay afloat.

When people thrive, organisations do too.

But what is this doing to their employees? In simple terms, this results-driven focus is sending our workforce into meltdown. The real question is, how long can the world of work carry on like this?

In a recent study by ExpertMarket they found that the UK has the lowest workforce productivity levels in the whole of Europe. As productivity is intrinsically linked to employee happiness, this new data reveals a worrying trend for the UK workforce.

Lindsey Reed, Career Management Expert at Career Ambitions commented: “an increasing number of clients are coming to us feeling overworked, underappreciated and generally disillusioned with their careers. They are constantly being pushed and stretched to reach targets, tick boxes, increase productivity and achieve goals – without feeling they are getting enough back.”

A recent study by The University of Warwick found that happiness led to a 12% spike in productivity – and companies are beginning to use this to their advantage. Rather than pay rises and bonuses, invest time and effort into your team. When people aren’t working at their best, businesses are ultimately losing out.

“Employees work harder, longer and more passionately when they are engaged in the workplace. It’s time for organisations to put more emphasis on fun in the workplace – in order to keep their employees happy and increase their satisfaction and consequently their productivity rates!” says Katherine Wiid, Career Management Expert at Career Ambitions.

The Levity Effect (best-selling book written by Scott Christopher and Adrian Gostick) uses case studies from some of the biggest global brands to argue that lightening up has a beneficial effect on the workplace. Not just on the mood, but on overall company performance too.

As workforce productivity continues to plummet, is it time to inject some fun back into the workplace?
