Small, but perfectly formed on the inside, the varied and colourful dishes displayed in the window show there’s nothing diminutive about the menu at The Garden Kitchen.
Opened in May 2014, The Garden Kitchen is the urban relative of The Garden Café, located in the Botanic Garden. Starting off with a mobile catering business funded by a loan from The Prince’s Trust, owner Andrew Smith took over running the Café at the Botanic Garden in 2005 and now coming full circle, the Café takes on work experience placements from the Prince’s Trust programme itself.
Back to Mill Road and with its old school blackboard scrolling round from the breakfast to lunch menu, the table at the front of The Garden Kitchen starts to fill up. At the heart of everything Andrew and the team do, is the philosophy of using good, basic ingredients and making them in to something great – something they themselves would like to eat.
Perfect for ‘on-the-go-food’, the Kitchen offers a huge variety of salads, hot and cold dishes, including Lebanese wraps, homemade soups and dahls, sausage rolls, slices, pasta and cakes – all made on the premises.
So, a great place for vegetarians to know about, there are also always loads of gluten and dairy-free options (and ask about sugar-free options too; all the team are really friendly and helpful). The concept at the Kitchen is healthy eating but with a fair sprinkling of indulgence!
