Laura Mvula, known for her inventive atmospheric mix of soul, jazz, R&B, classical and pop, shot to fame in 2013 with therelease of her debut album SING TO THE MOON. Since then, Mvula has won a number of prestigious awards, including Best Female Act and Best R&B or Soul Artist at the 2013 MOBO Awards. Bill Laurance, Grammy Award-Winner and original member of the internationally acclaimed SNARKY PUPPY, performs work from his album AFTERSUN - a tribute to space exploration and life in the cosmos, with Dance music and African percussion at its heart. Sons of Kemet features four of the UK jazz scene’s brightest stars, culminating in a revolutionary mix of music that spans jazz, rock, dub and Caribbean folk. Soweto Kinch, the award-winning alto-saxophonist and MC, performs material from his new album NONAGRAM, where he draws inspiration from the incorporeal concepts of mathematics. Kinch unites together his love for jazz, hip-hop and spoken word and has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic. Phronesis, a band with a fierce reputation as one of the most formidable trios in Europe, are known for their spell-binding, roller-coaster live performances which have won them numerous accolades, including two MOBO Award nominations for 'Best Jazz Act'. Binker and Moses and Resolution 88 (double-bill): multi-award winning duo Binker and Moses’ debut recording, DEM ONES has its roots in experiments between sound-checks and gigs while on the road. Over time, these initial ideas and jams have become templates for improvisation, with echoes of late period Coltrane and Charles Lloyd.
Fender Rhodes driven raw funk quintet Resolution 88 led by Tom O'Grady, playing original funk music in the vein of Herbie Hancock and more recent innovators such as Kaidi Tatham (Bugz In the Attic) will be performing material from their second album AFTERGLOW due out on SPLASH RECORDS on 9/9 this year. Founders of the Jazz Festival
Founders and Directors of the Festival, Roslin Russell, Gavin Spence and Kevin Flanagan wanted to open up jazz to new audiences, particularly young people, and give them the chance to get involved with jazz music as well as come and listen to it. The Festival will cover a wide range of genres across jazz - from vocal to instrumental, big bands to small groups, jazz standards to contemporary original composition. It also will reach audiences across City and University venues.
