Only a 15 minute train ride from Cambridge on the main line to London, we have discovered one of the best, new and truly independently owned village pubs – The Plough at Shepreth.

Watching new life being breathed into a business by intrepid owners is amazing and considering The Plough had been closed for nearly four years – it could easily have become just another name added to the long list of pubs lost forever. But after dedicated campaigning by locals to save the building from redevelopment, along came Nick and Jo Davis and after extensive renovation, opened The Plough’s doors once again in July 2014.

Very much like its owners, the pub is welcoming, relaxed and a little unconventional. On a bit of a crusade to do things differently – Nick and Jo have taken all that’s great about the traditional village pub and added more. Local ales (including namesake Shepreth Pale Ale from Cambridge’s craft micro-brewery Calverley’s), are complimented by a really great range of wines.

The menu is a little unconventional too with a combination of smaller tapas style choices alongside more substantial dishes – but these are not necessarily offered as normal starters, mains and puddings, so you can just dip in as you fancy!   The welcoming vibe makes for a very mixed and happy clientele and Nick and Jo love seeing them all interacting on a Friday night.

The pub is home to many events too – from art exhibitions to a gin club and loads of music nights. In fact the couple’s passion for music, art, socialising, entertaining, community and family just about sum up what the Plough is all about.
