Special event for business and start up community

As the government triggers Article 50 to start the process of leaving the EU, Allia Future Business Centre is  hosting an event “Brexit and Beyond” on Thursday 20th April to address the questions and concerns of the business and start up community in Cambridgeshire.

Keynote speaker Michael Barnes, Head of EU programmes at the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership will be giving his perspective on the process of BREXIT and what it will mean for businesses in the coming weeks, months and years.  It will give businesses the chance to get the facts behind the headlines. Michael Barnes has extensive experience of EU institutions, policies and programmes, including in regional policy, agriculture, fisheries and EU enlargement. He has also worked for the UK government for more than 25 years.

This event is designed for all those who have questions or concerns about the impact of leaving the EU on their business, from importers and exporters, to those enterprises that employ people from European countries.  Michael will explore the business opportunities that may arise as a result of Brexit and explain the legal process taking place in Government and how this will impact on regions in the UK including Cambridgeshire.

Brexit and Beyond, is being hosted by Allia Future Business Centre, who provide workspace and enterprise support to ventures who make a positive impact on people, planet and place in Cambridge and Peterborough.

The event is being held on Thursday 20th April 2017 from 4.30pm – 7.30pm at the Allia Future Business Centre, King’s Hedges Road, Cambridge CB4 2HY

About Michael Barnes

Michael has extensive experience of EU institutions, policies and programmes, including in Regional Policy, Agriculture and Fisheries and EU Enlargement. He worked for the UK government for more than 25 years and is currently Head of EU Programmes at the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership.

Michael and his team support local investment of the 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment (ESI) Funds. The team assists businesses, universities and other partners to develop ERDF and ESF project ideas; helps to promote EU funded rural development programmes; and is involved in various European Transnational Co-operation programmes.

As Head of European Programmes at the Government Office for the East of England (GO-East), Michael managed the closure of the 2000-06 East of England Structural Fund programmes. He was a member of the Programme Monitoring Committees for the 2007-2013 East of England ERDF Competitiveness Programme and England and Gibraltar ESF Programme.  Between 2001 and 2003, Michael led an EU twinning project in Riga to assist with Latvia’s EU accession preparations.
