The story of how Peter Harrison ended up making unique pieces of beautiful, handmade furniture, strangely enough started out in a vegetable plot.

A young Peter was employed by a local antiques’ dealer to dig his potato patch. Showing quite an aptitude for all things practical, it wasn’t long before he was helping the dealer in the restoration of items of furniture and from that, moved on to design and make his own.

So, self-taught, Peter now has over 25 years' experience behind him and specialises in creating modern/contemporary furniture, made from British, European and North American hardwoods. He uses timber from these countries as they have a good record of forest management and uses recycled or reused timber and fittings wherever possible.

Working with a wide variety of customers – both residential and commercial – Peter works either from scratch, producing designs on paper, computer (using CAD 3D design technology) and in scale model form or where the customer already has a design, he will simply give a quote for producing the piece.

Working from a former builder’s store in Cambridge, Peter’s workshop is filled with tools and machinery, both ancient and modern, which he uses to achieve the beauty and durability in his pieces. He carefully plans the cuts of wood to get the harmony of colour and grain, finishing them off with linseed oil, beeswax or modern lacquer and he even makes handles and metal fittings if needed – making each piece of furniture truly original and bespoke. This, after all, is what makes commissioning or buying from a craftsman such a special thing to do.
