Explore Independent Cambridge: Cuckoo

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the definitive guide to ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: the focus is on autumn fashion at the beautiful boutique Cuckoo.

Walking in to some boutiques can be an intimidating experience but you need have no such fears at Cuckoo, where you can always expect a genuinely bright and cheerful welcome from owners Kate Bols and Michelle Veenman and the other members of the Cuckoo team.

Natural wood floorboards and the use of reclaimed Victorian doors for the fittings gives an easy, no-fuss feel while showing off the extensive range of clothes, accessories and gifts perfectly.

Originally inspired by the eclectic mix of items available in the markets and streets of Islington, Michelle and Kate have succeeded in bringing a fun, London style shopping experience to Cambridge.

Always conscious of textiles, textures, patterns, cut and the real ‘wearability’ of clothing, Cuckoo chooses the designers it stocks on these criteria. High by Claire Campbell, Odd Molly and Bombshell by Katya Wildman are among other handpicked collections which mix quirky designs with practical items to wear and enjoy every day.

Cuckoo also boasts a growing number of independent footwear designers such as Esska, Seven Boot Lane and Papucei. Complementing the clothes are gorgeous accessories including handbags, an ever-changing collection of jewellery, beautiful scarves and girly gifts that are sure to please as presents for others or just for you.

As well as their city centre shop, there is also a Cuckoo at Burwash Manor which offers something a little different from the city centre store, including brands such as Masai, Two Danes, Sandwich and Seasalt. You can also buy online at the Cuckoo website, so shopping for beautiful clothes, whichever way, is always easy.
