Explore Independent Cambridge: Modish

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the definitive guide to ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: the shoe boutique Modish - so you can step out in style this Christmas.

Perhaps your toes complain when you slip something gorgeous on your feet? Maybe you’re fed up of boring run-of-the-mill high street shoes? Or you just don’t have the time, or indeed the inclination, to totter around on ludicrous heels?

If that sounds like you, you need to visit Modish.  For owner Sarah Decent is somewhat passionate (some may say borderline obsessive) about hunting down shoes from around the world that are unusual, beautiful and comfortable.

In fact, Sarah is practically evangelical when it comes to the importance of comfort. Partly because she’s got incredibly fussy feet, plus her knees have seen better days (she’s a Lindyhopper when she’s not in the shop), and she tells us that she doesn’t believe in torturing her customers!

But her shoes look great too, which is why her shop’s called Modish. Sarah used to live in Rome and work in Madrid, so you’ll find plenty of beautiful Italian
and Spanish shoes, often from designers new to the UK. So while popular brands such as Fly London and Geox are firm favourites, there’s also plenty that are different from what you’ll see in The Grand Arcade.

All in all it’s not hard to see why Modish has been recommended by The Guardian as one of top 100 shoe shops in the UK.
