Howard Group in the saddle for Bidwells’ annual Golden Triangle charity cycle challenge

More than 350 tired but elated cyclists rolled into Cambridge last Thursday afternoon to complete the now annual Bidwells Golden Triangle Bike Ride – a 100-mile charity cycle event from Oxford to Cambridge via Milton Keynes.

All entry fees paid go directly to the charity, raising £21,000 towards Maggie’s work providing free practical, emotional and social support to people living with cancer.

Representatives of Maggie’s were on hand to welcome finishers at the finish line at Anstey Hall, Trumpington, who were greeted with celebratory Bidwells beers.

The 100-mile rural route starts in Oxford, weaving in and out of villages and small towns, and has a halfway point near Milton Keynes in Woburn, where those who prefer a 50-mile route to Cambridge can start their journey.

This is the ride’s third year but has quickly become a popular and permanent fixture in the property industry calendar. More than 75 Bidwells staff took up the challenge this year. The 179-year-old property consultants has offices in Cambridge, Oxford and Milton Keynes.

Patrick McMahon, Bidwells’ Senior Partner, completed the 50-mile route and said at the finish line: “It must be the best one yet. A beautiful route, real camaraderie along the way, and I’ve just handed over a sizeable sum of money to Maggie’s making the tired legs and aching muscles thoroughly worthwhile, again.

“Huge thanks must also go to our sponsors – Howard Group, Coel, Redrow, Clarion and SDC – who helped ensure the maximum amount of money reached Maggie’s and that we could all have a beer afterwards!”

The Bidwells organisation team created a full training plan to help amateur riders prepare for the challenge. Riders of all abilities take part with the route meticulously planned to ensure a variety of pit stops are available to refuel and reenergise.

The course is also inspired by the potential route for new road and rail links between Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Oxford, part of Government’s Oxbridge Growth Corridor initiative.

Nicholas Bewes, CEO of sponsor Howard Group, commented: “Howard Group is very happy to have been involved with Bidwells’ Golden Triangle Bike Ride, which has become a firm fixture in the property community’s annual calendar. A tough challenge for those involved, but undoubtedly hugely rewarding.

“We are thrilled that this event has garnered such generous support from so many to help Maggie’s continue their invaluable work, both locally and further afield.”

Maggie’s offers free practical, emotional and social support to people living with cancer, and their family and friends and our donations will help towards funding their centres across the UK, located in specialist NHS cancer hospitals.

Property magazine EG was Bidwells’ media partner for the event.
