Explore Independent Cambridge: Ian Olsson Photography

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the community of ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, people, businesses, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Ian Olsson Photography.

An extraordinary childhood growing up in some of the world’s most picture-perfect locales, from Thailand and Turkey to Bahrain and Brunei inspired a spirit of wanderlust in Ian Olsson – and he began shooting his surroundings on his Minolta camera. So began a love affair with photography, which has seen him carve out a successful career and earn a reputation for creativity, friendliness and professionalism.

Starting out covering black tie events at university, Ian became a full-time photographer over a decade ago, and since then he’s proved he can turn his hand to any job, whether photographing eye-wateringly expensive Knightsbridge apartments or the toilets at Legoland (yes, really).

His portfolio includes weddings in the UK and Europe, corporate, event and party photography and executive portraits. Ian’s favourite commission is live theatre, relishing the challenge of capturing ‘atmosphere, passion and energy’ on camera. And his favourite muse is his cute, fluffy cockapoo puppy, Leo.

Whether promoting independent Cambridge businesses or multinational companies, Ian loves the variety of his job. Travel continues to be a passion, with regular jaunts overseas to get close-ups of awe-inspiring wildlife in the Galapagos or iconic motor cars in Cuba. The wanderlust burns as brightly as Ian’s studio lights.
