Explore Independent Cambridge - Clarendon Street Veterinary Surgery

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the community of ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, people, businesses, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Clarendon Street Veterinary Surgery.

Taking a poorly pet to the vets can be an anxiety-inducing experience both for the owner and their furry friend – and practices can often be cold and clinical. That’s not the case, however, at Clarendon Street Veterinary Surgery, which feels immediately welcoming, from the bowl of dog biscuits on the windowsill and contented cat Calypsa snoozing in the reception in-tray, to the cards of thanks from grateful owners and the friendly staff buzzing around.

The city centre practice has been run by Patrick Von Heimendahl for 20 years, providing vaccinations, neutering, surgery, microchipping and home visits, caring for cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, and the occasional chicken! Earlier this year, Patrick’s niece and fellow vet Harriet O’Riordan joined the team. As almost 70 per cent of veterinary surgeries have been snapped up by corporates, Patrick hopes Harriet’s arrival will help the practice retain its independent, friendly feel.

Alongside Patrick and Harriet work Rosalia, Emma, Sue and Anna, plus surgery cat Zamba, a rescued stray (mum to Calypsa) who spends her time lounging around in the warmest spots. They say cats are intuitive – and clearly Zamba has fallen on her feet/paws to snare this fine surgery as her forever home!
