Software Student Placement – 2019 / 2020

We are looking for a student to work in the software department. The role requires logical thinking with a science, engineering and mathematical background to analyse and solve software engineering challenges. The successful candidate will be able to apply theoretical modelling and simulation approaches as well as hands on prototyping and testing. There will be opportunities to represent the business by interacting with members of internal teams, external suppliers and clients.

We are offering a one-year, paid internship placement to students as the ‘year in industry’ part of their degree course. We ensure our interns are given the high level of support, mentoring, direction and feedback that they need to advance their skills and broaden their knowledge.

Our interns work on interesting and challenging projects across different teams and disciplines to ensure a full and in-depth experience, helping them to secure future employment.

Responsibilities:

Software design, implementation, documentation and release as required for consultancy projects.                                                                  

Software development will be done in accordance with industry standards and working within an ISO 13485 quality management system.

 

Ideal Candidate Requirements:

This role requires a logical thinker who demonstrates:                                               

  1. Basic experience within personal or university software development projects, using at least one of C/C++, C#, Java, Swift, Assembler.
  2. Basic experience of developing software for Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, iOS or in embedded environments.
  3. An interest in using real time operating systems: e.g. FreeRTOS, WindRiver, QNX, Windows Embedded or similar.
  4. An interest in mobile and embedded platforms, kernel mode software, device drivers, 3D graphics, Bluetooth, networking, SPI, I2C and serial communications.
  5. A basic understanding of, or interest in, communications protocol design, user interface design, security and cryptography.
  6. An awareness of, or willingness to learn, the principles of Software Engineering, including specification and verification within the full software development life-cycle.  Experience with software engineering tools, such as issue trackers and source code control, are a bonus.
  7. A willingness to embrace agile methodologies, e.g. SCRUM.
  8. A willingness to gain understanding of Test Driven & Behaviour Driven Development.
  9. An ambition to work on software design for manufacture in medical and diagnostic devices, consumer products, biotechnology, laboratory or test equipment.
  10. An ability to communicate ideas, concepts and designs, and contribute to design and code reviews.
  11. The ability to manage your own time and tasks within projects to time and budget restraints.
  12. A willingness to learn about current legislation and harmonised standards applicable to our client’s projects, eg MDR, IVDR, ISO 14971, ISO 13485, IEC 60601, IEC 61010, IEC 62304.
