The new Cambridge TV channel, highlighting the best in Cambridge arts, science, business and culture for viewers locally and around the world, launches today (Tuesday).

Tune in to Cambridge TV News at 8pm on Freeview channel 8 and Virgin 159 in the Cambridge area or watch programmes on demand at www.cambridge-tv.co.uk

Cambridge TV is the new Ofcom-licensed channel for Cambridge, offering a schedule of local shows and great programmes from the community of local TV channels all over the UK (http://localtvnetwork.org.uk/members/).

Carl Homer, Director of Cambridge TV, says: "Cambridge has a wealth of interesting stories to cover and experts to speak on every imaginable subject. We invite all businesses, organisations and individuals to contact us and share their news.

"This is a great opportunity to tell our Cambridge stories to one another and to the rest of the world; to promote and learn about Cambridge - its history and future as a centre for research, innovation and culture.

"We hope people will take advantage of the platform and help us shape it to reflect the city’s character, intelligence and creativity.”

Cambridge TV is one of 19 local TV channels transmitting on Freeview and Virgin Media in the UK – Ofcom has licenced more than 30 channels to launch by 2016. The licence has been awarded for 12 years and can be extended.

The channel will be supported by advertising, private investment, sponsorship and a News Content Supply Deal with the BBC.

Based near Newmarket Road, Cambridge TV has its own studio, journalists and staff, but welcomes contact from freelance professionals or people seeking experience in television. We’re also interested to meet anyone with good quality video content they’d like to share with our audience.

Cambridge TV’s predicted coverage at launch is from Ely to the Shelfords (north to south) and from Madingley to Fulbourn (west to east), but people further afield may be able to receive the channel too.

Freeview owners check channel 8 from Tuesday 18th Aug evening onwards. If you need to retune: http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/howtoretune

Virgin Media customers in Cambridge check channel 159.

All programmes will be available online at:  www.cambridge-tv.co.uk
