Leading coding and marking specialist Domino has returned to Newton Primary School in Eltisley for the second time, to work with two class teams to build two Goblin Kit Cars.

Six Domino Engineers – including apprentices Bradley Moor and Thomas Benham –are helping the children over a series of 17 planned two-hour sessions, working towards the Greenpower Education Trust’s regional Race Day on 5th July in Rockingham.

Speaking about the project, Class Teacher Abbi Lange said: “Building the Goblin Kit Cars is really capturing the children’s imagination. It’s a rich learning opportunity and they became engaged in the project immediately – firstly by excitedly opening the boxes full of large and small parts and weighing each individual component to work out how much the car might weigh when fully built.

“As last time, the pupils are getting involved in every element of the build: from design, building the chassis, wiring and testing the vehicle, as well as writing to sponsors to obtain money for helmets, gloves and the coach to Rockingham where the cars will be put through their paces.

“For me as Class Teacher, I am finding that the benefits of the project are excellent – the children are gaining valuable experience in teamwork, technical skills, handling tools, problem solving, data analysis and risk-taking.”

Sharon Viccars, Internal Communications Executive at Domino added: “Our team is delighted to be working with Newton Primary again and really enjoying the interaction with the children. This is just one of our portfolio of projects where we work with the local community and we hope that other local businesses might like to get involved and support the project too. Please contact Abigail Lange on 01480 880215 or email her on office@newton.cambs.sch.uk if you can help.

“We are also planning to arrange a visit for the pupils to our Bar Hill headquarters so they can learn more about our coding and marking technologies.”

The Greenpower Education Trust aims to advance education in the subjects of sustainable engineering and technology for young people. Since it was established in 1999, Greenpower has worked with over 500 schools around the UK.
