Learn as you earn - Domino Printing celebrates apprentice achievements

A Cambridge company is marking this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from 7th-13thFebruary, by paying tribute to its own Apprentices – and launching new opportunities in its 2022 Programme.

Domino apprenticeships

Domino Printing currently has a cohort of 15 apprentices who have joined through its Apprenticeship Scheme, all reaping the benefits of getting real-life experience in the workplace, combined with developing academic and vocational skills.

This year, the company is offering a further three placements in different areas of the business at its Bar Hill headquarters: two in R&D and one in Operations, with structured pathways to Technician and Engineering roles.

Currently on the Scheme is Alex Shaul who is a Supply Chain Apprentice and studying for a Chartered Business Management (BA) degree at Anglia Ruskin University.

Alex says: “So far, I have spent time in different areas of the business including material planning, purchasing and strategic sourcing and have just returned from a three-month international secondment in Switzerland, working at Domino Graph Tech. I’ve also spent time in Germany.”

Bradley Moore is now in a permanent role at Domino having achieved an HNC in Engineering through the Apprenticeship Scheme.

Bradley says: “My apprenticeship has given me great experience and exposure to real-world problems, enabling me to advance through the practical aspects of the job a lot faster. I’ve also been given opportunities such as managing my own small projects and being able to work on a CAD computer early on.”

Domino also offers existing employees the opportunity to become Apprentices to develop their knowledge and skills whilst in a permanent role.

Rosie Celentano, HR Administrator is taking this route. She says: “I wanted to develop my knowledge and skills within HR, and decided to do the CIPD Level 5 apprenticeship. I am nearing the end of my course and feel that I have gained so much experience as well as building my confidence within my role.”

The value of Domino’s Apprenticeship Scheme is endorsed at all levels of the business including Robert Pulford, CEO who started his own career in an apprenticeship role.

Robert says: “I didn’t really plan to follow the apprenticeship route as a first step after school, it was more a steer from friends and family.

“I’ve subsequently completed further formal qualifications through my career, and feel that becoming CEO was a result of some hard work, commitment, and some good luck. I’m convinced though, that being an apprentice helped shape me in being both ‘rounded’ and ‘grounded’ in my outlook to life, and business. There is no right or wrong, and I’d say progress is more about attitude than qualification, but I’d have no hesitation in recommending the apprenticeship route as a path to those considering it.”

National Apprenticeship Week is an annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships across England and a time to recognise and applaud apprenticeship success stories across the country.
