Sawtry engineer achieves Chartered status

Civil Engineer Lewis Bridgman has been awarded membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Lewis has met all the requirements of the ICE’s Chartered Professional Review and is entitled to add the letters MICE to his name and adopt the Institution’s own protected title of ‘Chartered Civil Engineer’.

He was presented with his membership certificate on Monday (19th) by ICE President Sir John Armitt at a special ceremony held at ICE’s headquarters in Westminster.

ICE Regional Director for the East of England, Glen Own said: “Achieving Chartered Civil engineer status is a significant personal and career achievement and I welcome Lewis into the ICE.”

Lewis is a Divisional Manager with Ringway Infrastructure Services Ltd or Horsham, West Sussex. Delighted at achieving Chartered status he said:

“Since successfully attaining a Masters in Civil Engineering (2005-10) and being academically qualified, I have pursued further training and experience to support my goal to become professional qualified as a Chartered Engineer. As a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, which is internationally recognised, I can demonstrate and continue to practise as a competent Engineer.”

ICE's professionally qualified grades of membership are internationally recognised and highly valued. Attainment is widely viewed as a significant achievement and a benchmark of an engineer's competence and professional standing.

Lewis said it took lots of hard work but is well worth it:

“The hardest part was being self-disciplined throughout my personal and professional development I had to self-assess (what I know and can do) and self-evaluate (how well I am doing in practise). I was able to draw on my strengths and improve in other areas becoming a sound all rounded Civil Engineer. I learned to balance my professional duties and obligations with the daily demands of the job and my personal life.”

He went to Sawtry Community College and then Loughborough University for a degree in engineering. But what made him choose the subject?

“It can provide you with the skills that can lead to any number of different vocations within the construction industry. Speaking from experience it is an interesting and fascinating career, with the endless opportunities within the field of engineering, there is no better way to secure your future prospects!”

Lewis took up his present role as a senior Division Manager in August 2015. He has responsibility for a team and a services contract worth in excess of £30m a year.

ICE membership is available to civil engineers, technicians and technical/scientific specialists at every stage of their professional career, from students and apprentices to senior board directors. Further information is available at: www.ice.org.uk/Membership
