Six months ago, we opened the doors to The Grain Barn at Sandon Manor. At the time, we talked about what we hoped the space would become. Six months later, after welcoming businesses and teams to stay, work and spend time together on the estate, we have had the chance to see how it is actually being used and what seems to make the biggest difference to a successful offsite.
Since opening in April, The Grain Barn has welcomed teams from businesses including PizzaExpress, Organised Nutrition and Nara Communications, and we have been delighted by the feedback we have received.
More importantly, those first six months have given us a fascinating insight into what businesses really value when they take their teams away.
- Staying together changes the dynamic
Perhaps the biggest thing we have noticed is the difference between simply holding a meeting away from the office and actually staying away together.
The Grain Barn accommodates up to 30 guests, with ensuite bedrooms alongside large communal spaces where teams can meet, eat, relax and socialise.
When everyone stays in one place, the offsite doesn't finish when the formal meeting does. Conversations continue over dinner, around the bar or with a coffee the following morning.
Those informal moments can be just as valuable as the scheduled sessions.
2. The Best Conversations Don't Always Happen Around a Meeting Table
We've also seen how important it is to give teams a variety of spaces.
A strategy session might need a formal meeting environment, while a smaller conversation can work better on a sofa, over lunch, outside in the courtyard or during a walk.
At Sandon Manor, businesses can move between meeting and breakout spaces, the Grain Barn's communal areas and the wider estate. It allows the pace and atmosphere to change throughout the stay rather than asking everyone to remain in the same room from morning until evening.
3. A Change of Environment Really Does Matter
One of the reasons businesses choose an offsite is to step outside the routines of everyday working life.
At Sandon Manor, that change isn't simply about leaving the office. The Grain Barn looks out across the estate's rewilded countryside and nature reserves, so nature becomes part of the experience rather than just the backdrop.
A walk outside between sessions can provide breathing space, encourage a completely different conversation or simply give everyone time to reset before returning to work.
For businesses wanting to go further, we can also incorporate nature recovery activities into an offsite, giving teams an opportunity to spend time together while actively contributing to biodiversity and habitat creation across the estate.
4. Downtime isn't Wasted Time
Another thing the first six months have reinforced is the value of not scheduling every minute.
Teams need time to switch off.
Shared meals, a drink together, a walk through the estate or time in our outdoor natural spa can provide a welcome contrast to a day of strategy and discussion.
The spa, with its rainwater-fed wood-fired hot tubs, Japanese cold plunge pool and cedar horsebox sauna, has become another way for staying teams to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Giving people permission to stop can be an important part of helping them reconnect.
5. Every Team Uses an Offsite Differently
There isn't one perfect formula and Sandon Manor's team will work with a business to make it work perfectly for them.
Some businesses arrive with a tightly structured strategy programme. Others want more time for team building and socialising. Some incorporate nature, wellbeing or activities, while others simply want a beautiful, private place where everyone can concentrate and spend uninterrupted time together.
That flexibility has become one of the things we value most about The Grain Barn.
It can accommodate up to 30 guests on its own, while businesses requiring more accommodation can combine it with Sandon Manor House and the Dovecote, allowing up to 50 people to stay across the estate.
The wider Sandon Manor venue also provides meeting, dining, breakout and event spaces, making it possible to build an offsite around the needs of the individual team rather than fitting the team around a conventional conference package.
Six Months On
When we designed The Grain Barn, we wanted to create somewhere that felt very different from a traditional corporate hotel, relaxed and stylish, but also practical; somewhere teams could work seriously without the whole experience feeling corporate.
Six months on, it has been enormously rewarding to see businesses making the space their own.
The strongest feedback has reinforced something we believed from the beginning: a successful offsite isn't necessarily about filling every hour with activities or meetings.
Sometimes it's about creating the right environment, bringing everyone together and giving people the time and space to talk.
And often, the conversation that matters most isn't the one you scheduled.
