The BBC Domesday Project was created to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the original Domesday Book and capture a snapshot of the UK using digital media. It saw thousands of schoolchildren and community groups across the UK contribute photographs, surveys and local information to create one of the world’s first interactive multimedia archives, years before the Internet became widely available.
CCH's event will allow visitors to learn about the creation, preservation and restoration of the project, hearing first-hand stories from those involved. Expected guests include Stewart Atkins, Andy Finney, Mike Tibbetts, Peter Armstrong, Ruth Rosenthal, Roger Kelly and Richard Tapper (BBC), Jardine Barrington-Cook (Logica), Chris Turner (Acorn), and Simon Inns and Ian Smallshire (Domesday86).
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Domesday Community and National Discs on a range of fully working original systems and modern emulations including:
RM Nimbus BBC Domesday System
BBC Master AIV Domesday System
Raspberry Pi-powered Domesday emulation system
Also on show: a Philips ProLearn AT Workstation and other Domesday-inspired tech
As part of the celebrations, CCH is inviting former participants to share their memories. Whether you contributed as a pupil, organised the project as a teacher, or still have photographs, worksheets, notes or one of the iconic blue Domesday clipboards, the museum would love to hear your story. Contributions will help preserve the history of this pioneering project for future generations.
