Comment on cancellation of Oxford to Cambridge expressway

At a meeting about the ‘Arc’ on Friday, Westminster was reminded that the Cambridge-Milton Keynes-Oxford Arc is an economic focus, not a physical boundary, to make best use of the excellence in the area that could keep the UK at the forefront of international growth.

This is for the benefit of the whole UK and it is hoped that it can be green, sustainable growth that will enhance attractiveness rather than diminish it.  The controversial roadway has been dropped from the plans in favour of local road improvements which are still envisaged for easing daily journeys.  The focus is particularly on public transport which, with active travel, has a much smaller impact on the environment than private cars.

The Department of Transport said that Highways England had invested approximately £28 million in developing the Oxford to Cambridge expressway project, adding : "The analysis undertaken as part of that project is now supporting the consideration of where alternative future road investment may be needed in this area."

Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner chaired the event and commented “I had been calling for the [Expressway] scheme to hit the buffers for years including directly challenging the Prime Minister at PMQs. At a time when council budgets are under strain we know the wasted cash would double the number of potholes we fill in, keep more street lights shining and help fund a pay rise for our key workers.”
