Muscular Dystrophy UK (MDUK) is the charity which has organised it for the last ten years. And this year the MDUK events team are really looking forward to seeing everyone back, running through closed streets past Cambridge’s ancient colleges.
‘Team Jamie,’ is a group which signs up each year to run in memory of Jamie Pammenter who had Duchenne muscular dystrophy and who died in 2018.
This will be his mum Dawn’s seventh 10k Cambridge Town and Gown. She has been joined by a group of 17 – so far.
A long-time Wimbotsham resident, she has worked at Cambridge University for about 20 years, now in the Admin/HR Office at the University Information Services (UIS).
She said: “It’s a great route and Muscular Dystrophy UK is very close to my heart because my late son (Jamie) had Duchenne muscular dystrophy.”
MDUK Race Director, Jessie Keighley said, “Cambridge Town and Gown is the autumn run of our 10k series which includes a 10k in Oxford. The 2021 event will be the 10th edition and this year MDUK is to join forces with the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon for the first time, to create The Cambridge Festival of Running."
The new Cambridge Festival of Running will comprise:
The MDUK Town and Gown 10k- Saturday 16 October
The Junior 3k - Saturday 16 October
Cambridge Half Marathon - Sunday 17 October.
The half marathon gives people like Justyna Vail, 39, the chance to get involved in a major running festival, at a level she can manage.
Justyna was a gifted runner until she was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis as a teenager. Although now her dreams of being a Global athlete are over, she is excited that she can take part in a half marathon and help MDUK’s work.
Justyna, who works at the Prince Albert in Ely and lives in Little Downham said, “I feel very lucky to be taking part in the Cambridge Half Marathon. I am so happy to be doing this for MDUK. My husband Martin is also taking part and I really want beat him! .
"My motto is ‘Be Strong and Never Give Up’"
Jessie said, “Our scenic 10k route takes people through the heart of Cambridge passing many landmarks, historic university college buildings and along the River Cam. You’ll find beginners taking on their first 10k race, and more experienced runners, hoping to beat their personal bests. So whether it's your first 10k or you're a seasoned pro - this is the perfect event for you!”
Up & Running is giving a 15% discount to runners and F45 Training will run the warm-up sessions.
