The Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit is an internationally renowned institution focused on the delivery of field-changing mechanistic insights into toxicology and disease.
We are looking to appoint a Research Associate to join the laboratory of Prof. Marion MacFarlane to carry out research into the 'Molecular Mechanisms of Cell Death', with a particular focus on obtaining novel insights on the principles that govern regulation of key multiprotein signalling complexes that direct cell death/survival.
The Lab have pioneered the reconstitution of cell death signalling complexes, e.g. the DISC (doi:10.1016/j.molcel.2016.02.023) and characterised the 3D architecture of these large macromolecular assemblies (doi:10.1038/s41467-020-20806-9; doi:10.1016/j.immuni.2024.04.025) and are aiming to integrate biochemical, molecular and cell biology-based approaches to map these discoveries to signalling output. The Lab are also working to identify the key proteins/pathways that control cell fate decisions and mediate the toxic effects of advanced therapies. This aligns with their focus on defining the signalling networks involved in drug-induced mitochondrial toxicity, particularly in the context of liver injury. Through this work, they are informing strategies to mitigate the side effects of both existing and new therapies.
Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant discipline such as Biochemistry or Molecular Cell Biology together with experience in cell death signalling pathways. Experience in biochemical techniques for protein expression in mammalian systems and a good publication record are essential. More information on the person specification can be found in the Further Particulars document.
