Internet of Things White Paper – Paul Smith
Paul Smith, Marketing Manager at Agar Scientific takes a leap into the not-too-distant future and asks us to consider a more connected world with a seamless wireless infrastructure, simplifying our lives at home and at work. In this compelling piece, he makes us think how different the world is going to be and shows how companies like Elektron Technology will be at the forefront of delivering this technology.
Dr Rob Young tells us how his close relationship with Agar has spanned his entire career
A long-standing relationship with Agar Scientific has helped Dr Rob Young throughout his research career, spanning rheumatoid arthritis, ocular degeneration, osteoarthritis and currently corneal structure, taking him from Cambridge to Bristol and then Cardiff. Use of microscopy has been at the heart of his research covering various light microscopy techniques, transmission electron microscopy and 3D microscopy.
In the early days of his research, Rob tells us about how he joined the Strangeways Research Laboratory in Cambridge, ‘working closely with Dr Audrey Glauert, who edited the acclaimed Practical Methods in EM series of textbooks, and who had very close links with Alan Agar, our original founder. Alan used to come to the lab quite frequently whenever there were new products being launched. We often got to test them in the lab for him. He was always very enthusiastic and energetic. I was a young post-doc then. My work at that stage was into the inflammation and degradation of connective tissues associated with quite devastating eye diseases of the cornea and sclera. We were using various light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques for our investigations, so I was extremely fortunate to be part of Audrey’s laboratory and to have those very close links with Alan, as well as later with Fred Sheldon and Lynne Joyce.
I remember a particular product which Agar marketed called the UVF35 low temperature cabinet. This came about when low temperature resins and low temperature embedding were becoming important for ultrastructural research, and in particular for immuno-gold localisation. Alan developed this equipment for efficient low temperature resin embedding; the prototype was put into the Strangeways laboratory and Audrey and I carried out experiments to test its performance. We published a paper in the Journal of Microscopy as a result of that series of experiments showing that the unit could control the exothermic effect of UV on Lowicryl resin polymerisation that was really useful at the time.
In 1988 I moved to Bristol with a research emphasis more towards arthritis and tendon structure in osteoarthritis. I worked in Bristol until 1996 and continued to rely on Agar for most of the microscopy needs I had at the time - we used a lot of the small instruments and resins and general EM reagents.
In 1996, the collagen contingent of the Bristol group moved here, to Cardiff, where more recently I have been working in the School of Optometry & Vision Sciences. Throughout this time although the nature of the work has changed, we’ve continued to acquire most of our reagents from Agar.
I’ve interacted with many other microscopists over the years, in particular in Bristol where I was part of an internationally renowned research group who were at the forefront of cryomicroscopy, many of whom also used Agar in preference to some of the other microscopy suppliers.
Agar’s tradition is in good advice and a friendly approach, they are very personable and I’ve had a good relationship with them for over 30 years.’
Don’t lose sleep over Heartbleed
You may have come across Heartbleed, the latest security-defying cyber-bug. Designed to be used to encrypt secure data from websites, such as customer data on the “logged in” part of e-commerce websites, this bug has rendered many sites vulnerable. Rest assured we’ve taken steps to maintain the integrity of our site software, preventing the possibility of any attack.
