Airport staff help students gain career skills

Stansted Airport was awash with sharp-suited youngsters as dozens of Year 11 students took part in a mock interview day at the airport.

Organised by Stansted’s community relations team as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme, a panel of airport volunteers guided the candidates from Stansted’s Forest Hall School through the interview process and offered tips on how to land that very first job.

Joanne Davies, Stansted’s Education Co-ordinator, said: “Mock Interviews prepare young people with the necessary skills that will help them find work or secure a place at their preferred college or VI Form. Without question, this initiative not only benefits the students but also develops skills for our colleagues volunteering too.”

Each student taking part had to write letter of application and update their CV, which were passed onto the pseudo employers ready for the interview. Afterwards the students received verbal and written feedback.

Student Marley Wright said: “It really increased my confidence and helped me understand how to perform well at an interview. The whole day was well organised and a great experience for a teenager.”

Engaging with young people, particularly those living in areas close to the airport, is a vital part of the airport’s community relations work. Miss Davies explained that today’s event kicks off a series of education projects planned by the team over the next 12 months.

“As part of our commitment to inspire a generation of young people we are planning to build an on-site education centre, expand our apprenticeship programme and role out new work experience schemes and community outreach activities,” she said.
