Cambridge Literary Festival writes:
Last night (12 November 2014), Festival Patron Ali Smith struck 'gold' as she was awarded the Goldsmiths Prize 2014 with her highly-original and critically-acclaimed novel How to be Both. Described by Francis Spufford, author and chair of judges, as a novel "in which the ideas break free and float like figures in the fresco. It's dizzyingly good and so clever that it makes you want to dance," Ali Smith's experimental, wonderfully clever and genre-bending novel 'How to be Both' serves as a "revolutionary force" whilst reflecting Ali's quiet brilliance as one of our most daring and contemporary modern writers.
The Goldsmiths Prize, run in association with our media partners New Statesman and with their Culture Editor Tom Gatti on this year's judging panel, is now in its second year. Eimear McBride became the Prize's first winner with 'A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing' in 2013. After Ali was named this year's winner, Francis Spufford described 'How to Be Both' as “a book which confirms that formal innovation is completely compatible with pleasure – that it can be, in fact, a renewal of the writer’s pact with the reader to delight and to astonish”.
Here at the Festival office we are absolutely thrilled with Ali's well-deserved win and can't wait for her to join us at the Winter Festival 30 November. Ali Smith
