Almost 40 per cent of UK firms expect profitability to fall this year, according to the British Chambers of Commerce’s latest Quarterly Economic Survey. Cambridgeshire business leaders will explore these economic challenges first-hand at The Power of Business, hosted at Ely Cathedral on Thursday 9 October by Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce.
Headlining the evening is Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, who will provide an exclusive national overview of the UK economy. With a career spanning senior roles at No.10 Downing Street, Disney, WPP, and Avado, Shevaun brings unparalleled insight and a direct link to government decision-making. This is a rare opportunity for local businesses to hear from one of the UK’s most influential business voices.
The event comes at a critical moment. The British Chambers of Commerce’s latest Quarterly Economic Survey highlights the challenges UK businesses are currently facing:
- 90% of firms face rising labour costs due to higher employer National Insurance contributions and the national living wage
- 67% struggle to recruit skilled technical staff, slowing growth and productivity
- Sales remained flat overall, but one in four firms reported growth in overseas markets
- 60% of businesses are actively recruiting, yet 62% still operate below full capacity
Charlotte Horobin, CEO of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, said:
“The Power of Business is about giving our region’s business leaders the insight and connections they need to thrive. By combining national and local perspectives in such an iconic setting, we are creating a platform to share ideas, challenge thinking, and inspire future success.”
“We are particularly honoured to welcome Shevaun to Cambridgeshire for what promises to be a truly thought-provoking evening.”
Alongside Shevaun’s keynote, Charlotte will highlight the innovation and talent driving Cambridgeshire’s business landscape, and the challenges that still need addressing locally.
The evening runs from 6.30–9.00pm and begins with a drinks reception. Guests are also invited to support the local community by bringing a tin of food to donate to Ely Foodbank. Representatives from the Princess of Wales Hospital (Ely) Charitable Trust will also be in attendance to share information about their work.
Tickets are priced at £15.00 (plus VAT) for members (use code ‘member’ at checkout) and £35.00 (plus VAT) for non-members. Secure your place here: https://www.cambridgeshirechamber.co.uk/event/the-power-of-business/
