Year 9 students will visit Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge campus  next week (between Monday, 16 January and Wednesday, 18 January) for the annual Eyes on the Prize event, to learn more about the subject options available to them at GCSE level and how the path to their chosen career may look.

Exhibitors will include local sixth forms, colleges, higher education institutions, training providers and employers, and the pupils will also be given tours of Anglia Ruskin University’s state-of-the-art facilities.

Pupils from 13 schools in and around Cambridgeshire – Soham College, Netherhall School, Coleridge Community College, Witchford VC, Parkside Community College, TBAP Cambridge, North Cambridge Academy, Impington VC, Sawston VC, Melbourn VC, Cottenham VC, Bassingbourne VC and Bottisham VC – will attend over the course of the three days.

Paul Dunton, Outreach Officer at Anglia Ruskin University, said: “Eyes on the Prize has become an established event in the school calendar.  The idea is simple enough, we connect young people with local training providers, employers and universities.  The ‘Prize’ is their career goal and the event is structured so that students get a chance to think about what they want to do, as well as to research how to get there.

“Students can approach a local sixth form college at the event and say ‘I’d like to apply to do A-level Art, what GCSEs should I take?’ Or a student interested in becoming a nurse can ask a university what GCSEs and A-levels they need to study.

“They can also approach a local employer and find out about the careers they have available and find out what sort of qualifications they would need to access such a career.  They can then ‘work backwards’ through the universities and colleges to decide their GCSE options.”

Now entering its fifth year, Eyes on the Prize has gone from strength-to-strength, having already provided inspiration, information and advice to nearly 5,000 young people.
