Apprentices to compete against UK's best at Skills Show 2013

Two outstanding Cambridge Regional College apprentices will be putting their skills to the test against the very best in the country this week.

Apprentice plumber Martyn Lee and IT apprentice Lewis Bourne have won their way through to the finals of WorldSkills UK – the Olympics of the skills world – after proving themselves among the top ten apprentices in their fields.

Lewis, 21, who works for Cambridge software company Cognidox – and who won gold in the national IT Technician contest last year - will be competing in the finals of the Network Security competition at the Skills Show 2013 at the NEC in Birmingham.

And Martyn, 24, an apprentice with Adrian Kidman Plumbing and Heating of Saffron Walden, will be battling it out in the finals of Skill Plumb at the same event – both of them watched by thousands of visitors to the spectacular show.

They will be competing over a full three days at the Skills Show, from 14 to 16 November, working under the scrutiny of schoolchildren, students, employers and members of the public.

The results of the competitions – part of a series of high level skills competitions at the show – will be announced at a gala evening at the NEC on Saturday (16 November).

Angel Hughes, head of apprenticeship services at Cambridge Regional College, said: “We are absolutely delighted that we have two apprentices competing in the finals at the Skills Show.

“Martyn and Lewis are talented, hardworking individuals with first class skills who have already proved themselves among the very best in the country. We wish them every success in the competition.”

More than 75,000 pupils from schools across the country are expected to visit the Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham, a celebration of further education, skills and apprenticeships.
